Season Opener
The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of the 2003-2004 season pairs the music of Benjamin Britten and Dmitri Shostakovich, brilliant composers who were contemporaries and friends. Britten’s haunting Russian Funeral quotes a Russian folk song that Shostakovich would later use in his Symphony #11. Tenor Dan Dressen and Minnesota Orchestra Associate Principal French Horn Michael Gast share the spotlight in Britten’s haunting Serenade, and William Schrickel summons up the full might of the MSO in a performance of Shostakovich’s intense and powerful Symphony #6.
